FamousAndy Summers Stretch ChordEvery Breath You Take, 1983 · The Police (song by Sting; guitar part by Andy Summers)
The main guitar figure that runs through the song: the first chord of the picked riff, A(add9), then the same stretch shape moved for F♯m, D and E.
An A major chord with an added ninth, spread across the four low strings so the fingers must reach five frets. Andy Summers picks it one note at a time as the riff of the Police's Every Breath You Take (1983), and the ninth sitting just under the third gives the part its bright, ringing shimmer. He said the idea grew out of playing Bartók violin duets.
