Chordhalla has no accounts and sets no cookies. You can use all of it without telling us who you are. Your settings stay in your own browser. With the full version, the sheets and sets you save are kept online for you as well, under a code made from your licence key.

Who we are

Chordhalla is made by Pyrokinesis Ltd, a company in New Zealand. If you have a question about this page, or about anything we hold about you, write to pyrokinesis.friedberg@gmail.com.

What stays in your browser

So that you do not have to set things up on every visit, the site keeps a few things in your browser’s own storage:

• the instrument, tuning and capo you last used;
• how you like chords shown and heard: fingers or intervals, cards or a list, which strings and voicings, which guitar sound, the dark or the light look;
• tunings you have saved;
• the chords you looked at most recently, and your last search;
• the chord progression you are working on, and the ones you save in the builder;
• the chord sheet you are making in the PDF builder, the sets of chords you save there (and, once there is a full version, whether you have it);
• shapes the site has already worked out, so that pages open faster.

None of this is sent to us or to anyone else. It is not a cookie, and no other website can read it. (A progression’s link carries its chords in the address itself, so whoever you give the link to can open it; nothing is stored anywhere to make that work.) Clearing this site’s data in your browser removes all of it. In a private window nothing is kept once you close it.

What other computers see

Showing you a web page means your browser has to ask a computer for it. These are all the computers the site asks:

• The one that serves Chordhalla, the lettering included. They are run by Cloudflare. Like every web server, they see your internet address, which page you asked for, and what kind of browser you use, and keep a short record of this to keep the service running and safe. We do not use that record to work out who you are.
• Counting visits. We count how many times each page is opened, using Cloudflare Web Analytics. It sets no cookie and does not tell us who you are.

That is the whole list. There is no advertising on the site, and nothing that follows you from one website to another. The sound you hear is made in your browser. Chords are worked out in your browser too: what you search for is not sent anywhere.

The full version

The full version is sold through Polar, who take the payment, send the receipt, handle the tax and email you a licence key. We never see your card, and there is no account with us.

• The key: when you paste it in, your browser sends it to Polar to check it, and does so again about once a week so that a refunded key stops working. Polar sees the key, your internet address and what kind of browser you use; it tells your browser the email address the key was bought with, which is shown only to you.
• Your sheets and sets: the ones you save are kept online as well as in your browser, in a database run by Cloudflare for us alone, so they are there in every browser where you enter your key. With them we keep a code made from your key (not the key: the code cannot be turned back into it), when each was saved, and nothing else about you. Your browser sends the key with each of these requests so that the service knows the sheets are yours, and the service checks the key with Polar about once a day.
• Live sheets: a sheet you publish can be opened by anyone with its link or its QR code; search engines are asked not to list it. We count how many times each one is opened, as a number only, and keep nothing about who opened it. When you stop sharing, the link says the sheet is no longer shared; when you delete the sheet, what it showed is deleted too.
• Deleting: delete a sheet or a set on your page and it is gone from the service straight away. To have everything kept under your key deleted, write to pyrokinesis.friedberg@gmail.com. Export writes your sheets and sets to a file on your computer, as a copy of your own.

Your rights

You can ask us what we hold about you, and ask us to correct it or remove it. Because the site has no accounts and gathers nothing, the answer will almost always be: nothing. Write to pyrokinesis.friedberg@gmail.com and we will answer within 20 working days.

These rights come from New Zealand’s Privacy Act 2020 and, if you live in the European Union or the United Kingdom, from the data protection law there (the GDPR). If you are unhappy with our answer you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner in New Zealand, or to the data protection authority where you live.

Children

Chordhalla is made for people learning to play, of any age. It gathers nothing about anyone, so there is nothing about children for us to hold.

When this page changes

If the site starts doing something new with information, such as accounts for saving your work, this page will say so before it happens, and the date at the top will change.
