FamousJames Brown ChordPapa's Got a Brand New Bag, 1965 · James Brown (guitar by Jimmy Nolen)
Right after the first verse, where the guitar plays a short unaccompanied one-chord break; the same ninth chord drives the rhythm guitar through the song.
A dominant ninth chord: a seventh chord with the ninth added on top, which sounds bright and bluesy but never quite at rest. Jimmy Nolen made it the sound of funk rhythm guitar on James Brown's Papa's Got a Brand New Bag (1965), chopping it in short, muted strokes, and it is heard on its own in the break right after the first verse. Played this way it sits between the bass and the drums like an extra percussion part.
